OTTAWA (AFP) - A Canadian soldier has been killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) that detonated while he was on foot patrol in southern Afghanistan, the Canadian military said Saturday.

Sapper Steven Marshall was killed Friday some 10 kilometers south-west of Kandahar City, Canada's Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

"Sapper Marshall was conducting a foot patrol in the Panjwayi District when the incident happened. No other soldiers were injured in this incident," the statement read.

This latest casualty brings to 133 the number of Canadian troops killed in Afghanistan since it began its mission with NATO's International Security and Assistance Force in 2002. Canada currently has some 2,800 troops in Afghanistan.
